Configuring Outlook to Filter AOL Mail
Outlook 2002 and 2003

Overview

You can have Outlook 2002 or 2003 filter AOL mail with Mailshell Anti-Spam. There are a few easy steps to get Outlook to filter your AOL mail for spam:

  1. For each Outlook email account you want filtered by Mailshell Anti-Spam, you need to create a new e-mail account in Outlook and configure it so you can send and receive mail from AOL's e-mail servers.
  2. After your account is configured, set up Mailshell Anti-Spam to automatically scan your AOL folder.

Configuring Outlook

Step 1

Choose Tools > Email Accounts from the main menu.

Step 2

In the E-mail Accounts window, click Add a new e-mail account and then click Next.

Step 3

In the Server Type window, click IMAP and then click Next.

You should see something like:

In the Internet "E-mail Settings (IMAP)" window, enter the following information:

  • Your Name: Enter the name you wish to appear on outgoing e-mail (in the example, it is given as "Jane").
  • E-mail Address. Enter your full AOL e-mail address, (e.g., jane@aol.com).
  • User Name: Enter your AOL screen name, (e.g., Jane).
  • Password: Enter the password for your AOL account.
  • Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.aol.com.
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com.

You should see something like:

Continue by clicking More Settings.

Step 6

Click the Outgoing Server tab.

Click the My outgoing server requires authentication check box, then click Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

You should see something like:

Continue by clicking the Advanced tab.

In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP):" field, change the number that displays to 587.

You should see something like:

Click OK, then click Next and finally click Finish.

Configuring Mailshell Anti-Spam to Automatically Scan Your AOL Folder

Step 7

You may now add your AOL folder for Mailshell Anti-Spam to scan. Start by clicking on the Mailshell Anti-Spam icon on the Mailshell Anti-Spam Outlook toolbar. On the Mailshell Anti-Spam popup, under the General Options section, click on "Enable Scan of Folders".

You should see something like:

Next, click the Add button. On the popup menu, select the Inbox folder of your AOL account to scan.

Next, click the OK button

You should see something like:

Click OK. Outlook is now configured to automatically scan your AOL folder for spam.

Congratulations! Outlook is now configured to filter your AOL e-mail.
