Configuring Your Email Client
There are two essential steps to get Mailshell Anti-Spam
running properly with your email client:
- Edit your settings in your email client.
- Create a filtering rule in your email client to process
the junk mail you receive.
Step 1
Enter the requested information:
Append the "#" character to the User Name
or Account Name field after your username, followed
by your incoming POP3 server information. In the following
example, it is given as: jane#mail.isp.com.
Note: Hotmail users should use "username#hotmail.com".
Currently, only the Hotmail Inbox folder is retrieved. MSN
users should use "username#msn.com".
In the Incoming mail (POP3): field,
replace your existing mail server name with "localhost".
Thus, given the following settings:
Incoming mail server: mail.isp.com
User name: Jane
You've changed it to:
Incoming mail server: localhost
User name: Jane#mail.isp.com
Please Note: For Pegasus Mail
users, you need to increase the timeout value to 600: go
to Tools > Internet options. Enter 600
for "Timeout for network connections" and click
OK.
Creating a Filter Rule
Step 2
When you create a filter, you should set it
to look for:
X-SpamCatcher-Flag: Yes
in the header of the message. You'll then
want to create a new folder, e.g. 'SpamCatcher', to move
any message containing the above header to or simply delete
it. Consult the help documentation of your email client
for more specific details of this process.
Please Note: Not all email clients
will allow you to filter on arbitrary portions of the message
header. Alternatively, you can select to "Enable Subject
Modification" under the Spam Scoring tab of our
Admin Console. After enabling subject modification, you
should create a rule to check for "[spamcatcher]" at the
beginning of the subject line.
