Virus Protection

What is the Virus Protection feature?

This feature, available to Premium users, protects you from email-borne viruses, tracking devices, unwanted images, and other security problems. When this feature is turned on, Mailshell will remove all images, attachments, java, and javascript from messages you receive. If you receive a message with an attachment, you will still be able to see the name and file type of the attachment; if you open the attachment, however, all you will see is a message saying that Mailshell has stripped the file at your request.

You can edit your general Virus Protection setting in the Spam Catcher Settings section of Spam Filtering, edit the setting for your @mailshell.com address (if you have one) by clicking the address name in the Spam Filtering Overview section of Spam Filtering, and edit the setting for each disposable email address by clicking the "edit" links in the Disposable Email Addresses section of Spam Filtering. If you are concerned about missing important parts of messages, you can also choose to save a full copy of the message in a Mailshell folder.

If you have the free trial service, this feature is available during the 30-day trial period after you first sign up. Once that period has expired, you can upgrade to the Premium Service to continue using it.

How can I change my Virus Protection setting?

Premium users can choose Virus Protection settings in several places:

  • To choose your general settings, go to the Spam Catcher Settings page in Spam Filtering. Use the "Virus Protection" checkbox to select whether you want this feature used and the buttons to choose whether you want to reset all of your addresses (including your @mailshell.com address, if you have one, and all of your disposable addresses) to this setting or only use it as the default for future disposable addresses. You can also use the menu to choose whether you want to save a full copy of the message.

  • If you have an @mailshell.com address, you can choose the setting for just this address by clicking the address name or the "edit" link in the Spam Filtering Overview section of Spam Filtering and using the checkbox to make your selection.

  • To change the setting for disposable email addresses, go to the Disposable Email Addresses section of Spam Filtering and click the "edit" link next to the address you want to change, then use the checkbox to make your selection.

What does "Deliver Full Message To" mean?

If you are concerned about missing important parts of messages that are stripped by the Virus Protection feature, you can choose to save a full, unaltered copy of the message in a Mailshell folder by going to the Spam Catcher Settings section of Spam Filtering and using the "Deliver Full Message To" menu to choose a folder.

By default, no copy is saved. Please note that if you do save a copy, you will receive two copies of every stripped message you receive--one that has been stripped that is delivered according to the normal delivery settings, and one that has not been stripped that is delivered according to this setting. Both messages will count toward your storage quota.
