What are forwarding addresses?
Forwarding addresses are outside email addresses where you can have messages automatically redirected from Mailshell.
You can see your list of forwarding addresses in the Address Book section by clicking the "Forwarding Addresses" link in the gray navigation bar: from this page, you can add and remove addresses and, for free trial users, verify a new address and change your active address. (Free trial users can add addresses to their list but can use only one address at a time; Premium users can use multiple forwarding addresses at once.)
If you gave a forwarding address when you first joined Mailshell, that email address is automatically active as your forwarding address. If you have the free trial service and wish to add a new forwarding address, you must first verify it before you can forward messages there, and if you change your active address, you must verify the original address before you can select it again. Premium users do not need to verify new forwarding addresses.
This list of forwarding addresses is also used with the Restrict Addresses for Remote Compose feature. When that feature is turned on, only addresses you have added to this list can use remote compose to send messages using your Mailshell addresses.
How do I add a new forwarding address?
To add a new forwarding address, go to the Forwarding Addresses page in the Address Book section. Enter the email address you wish to add in the field provided and click the "Add" button. Free trial users must first verify the address before forwarding messages there; Premium users do not need to verify new addresses.
If you are a Premium user, you can also select "[NEW FORWARDING ADDRESS]" from any of the various delivery settings throughout the site that offer that option. When prompted, enter the new address and click the "Add" button; the new address will be added to your list and automatically selected for the delivery setting you used. (Free trial users who select this option will simply be taken to the Forwarding Addresses page, where they must add the address manually and then return to that setting to select the new address.)
What does it mean to "verify" a forwarding address?
Verifying a forwarding address means that you have confirmed that you have access to it by using the Verification Key. Free trial users must verify new addresses before messages can be forwarded there; Premium users do not need to do so.
Once you have verified a forwarding address, you will never need to do so again, even if you delete it and then re-add it later.
How do I verify a new forwarding address?
If you have the free trial service, when you add a new forwarding address to your list on the Forwarding Addresses page in the Address Book section, an email is sent to that address containing a link and a Verification Key. Once you receive the email, there are two ways to verify the address:
- Simply click the link given in the email. You will be taken to the Forwarding Addresses page in the Address Book section and the address will be verified.
- You can also click the "verify" link next to the address on the Forwarding Addresses page. This will take you to a page where you can enter the Verification Key that was emailed to the address.
After you have verified the address, you will be able to forward messages there. (Note that once you have verified an address, you will never need to do so again, even if you delete it and then re-add it later.)
How can I change my forwarding address?
If you have the free trial service, you are limited to using one forwarding address at a time, and all messages forwarded through Mailshell must go to the same address. To change that address:
- Go to the Forwarding Addresses page in the Address Book section.
- If you haven't already, add and verify the address you wish to use.
- Use the buttons on the left side of your forwarding addresses list to select the address you wish to forward messages to.
- Click the "Select Active" button.
All forwarded messages, including password changes and new message alerts, will now be sent to the selected address.
If you have the Premium Service, you can select different forwarding addresses for different addresses. Once you have added a forwarding address, it will appear in all of the appropriate delivery settings.
Please note: For free trial users, if you gave a forwarding address when you signed up, that address is treated as verified only as long as you do not switch to another active forwarding address. If you choose another forwarding address, you will need to verify the original address before you can use it again.
Will my username change if I change my forwarding address?
If you originally signed up using a forwarding address and have been using that address to sign in, you will always use this address to sign in even if you stop using it as a forwarding address.
If you are unsure of which address you use to sign in, it's listed above your forwarding addresses on the Forwarding Addresses page in the Address Book section. If you do not wish to use this email address to sign in, remember that you can also sign in using your domain or subdomain.
If I reply to a message received at a forwarding address, will my address still be protected?
By default, your address will not be protected. You can, however, turn on the Email Address Redirection feature--when that feature is turned on, Mailshell automatically redirects your message so that when the recipient receives it, it appears to come from the appropriate Mailshell address. (For example, if you receive an email at your Yahoo! account that has been forwarded through the disposable email address family@your-name.com, when you reply, the recipient will see the message as coming from family@your-name.com rather than the Yahoo! address.)
If you do not want to have this feature on, you can also protect the address yourself by using the remote compose format.
Please note: Even with Redirection turned on, your email address will not be protected if you include it in the body of your email. The best policy is not to include your real email address within the message body and be aware of whether you have any automatic signatures or features that include the address.
What happens if an email message bounces from my forwarding address?
Messages forwarded to an outside email address may occasionally bounce due to server crashes or other technical problems at that outside address. To ensure that you don't miss any of these messages, they will be returned to Mailshell and saved in your Inbox folder.
How do I remove a forwarding address?
To remove a forwarding email address, go to the Forwarding Addresses page in the Address Book section and click the "delete" link next to that address. You will then be shown which Mailshell addresses are currently forwarding messages to that address; removing the address will cause these addresses to deliver to your Inbox. Once you are certain you want to remove this address, click the "Remove Forwarding Address" button. If you change your mind, click the "Cancel" button.
