Checking Mail

I have my addresses set to forward. Why are some messages I receive being saved in my Inbox?

To prevent email forwarding loops, if a message is received by a Mailshell address, and that Mailshell address is set to forward back to the same address that sent the message, the message will be saved in your Inbox. (For example, if you send a message from joe@yahoo.com to a Mailshell address that is set to forward to joe@yahoo.com, the message will be saved in the Inbox.)

I tried renaming a folder on the Folders page, but nothing happens. What's going on?

The "Rename" function uses JavaScript; if you do not have JavaScript enabled in your browser, the button will not function properly. Different browsers use JavaScript in different ways, but here's how to check your settings in three of the most common browsers:

  • In Internet Explorer 5 or 6, go to Tools > Internet Options, click the "Security" tab, and click the "Custom Level" button. Scroll down and make sure "Active Scripting" is enabled.

  • In Netscape 6, go to Edit > Preferences and double-click on "Advanced." Make sure that "Enable JavaScript for Navigator" is selected.

  • In AOL 6.0, go to Settings > Preferences, click "Internet Properties," click the "Security" tab, and click the "Custom Level" button. Scroll down and make sure "Active Scripting" is enabled.

Why was a message in my Trash folder deleted by the system?

Messages in the Trash folder older than 14 days are automatically deleted by the system.

I'm using Outlook Express with IMAP access and messages keep going back to "unread" status. What's going on?

There is a known bug when using Outlook Express 5 and 6 with IMAP in which the client fails to properly resynchronize the message state with the server: this means that, for new messages in your Inbox, checking for more new messages may cause messages you have read to revert back to the "unread" status. This bug seems to apply only to messages in your Inbox (not messages in other folders) and only when Outlook Express checks for new messages while you are viewing your Inbox (not when viewing other folders).

If you are experiencing this problem, there are several things you can do:

  • Don't save messages in your Inbox. Create different folders using either Outlook Express or Mailshell's website and update your delivery settings so that all your messages are delivered to those other folders.

  • Turn off automatic message checks and only click the "Send/Receive" button when viewing a folder other than your Inbox. (You can turn off automatic message checks by going to the main menu and selecting Tools > Options, then unchecking the "Check for new messages every" box in the "General" tab.
